Jason awoke as he always did, like a bullet rushing from a gun. He rose straight upright in his bed like a man fleeing from some invisible fear, hidden within his dreams. He sat, as he always did, panting and sweating until he regained his breath and composure and slipped sideways off his bed and walked a slow unsteady gait to his bathroom. He never noticed his wife lying next to him this early in the morning. He never usually noticed anything until any blurred memory of last night’s dreams had faded into the dawn. Rows of tiny, sterile white cubicles stretched off into the five-meter horizon of the building. The contents of each square white cage was largely identical, newer employees tried to personalize their own little slice of the building but after a while the pictures fell down and the ornaments were forgotten because when you are in a cubicle you work.
